We Are RARE Swan

RARE Swan is a daughter and mother team. We geek out over making the most of technology by bringing aesthetically beautiful and technically superior websites to enhance...whatever your website will enhance. Perhaps it will improve your life, your business or work, or your hobby.

We live and work together in the Pacific Northwest, Washington state, Cowlitz County, Longview. We take road trips together. We're friends. As long as we're squabbling, we're making progress. We laugh together, at ourselves, and at each other...a lot!

Mission Statement

To use the power of the internet to empower individuals and small businesses by offering comprehensive, end-to-end technology solutions.

Vision Statement

We will blend form and function to create and maintain spaces that vitalize our clientele, raising their voices so that their audience can hear them clearly.

Values

Synergy: We believe that combining different disciplines results in something greater than either element on their own. We believe in form AND function.

Voice: We believe that the power of the internet should be available to small business and individuals, and that they are also deserving of beauty and capability, regardless of having fewer resources than their larger counterparts.

Humor: We're funny! But hey, looks aren't everything! We believe that all situations are best managed with at least a touch of humor / irreverence, and bring that touch to all that we do.

Ethics: We believe that honesty, transparency, and accountability are advantages, not complications. We are utterly committed to “Doing the right thing at the right time - even if no one is watching.”

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.

Rachel Swan, HBIC

A chronic over-achiever, Rachel is the primary designer and developer. She's the RA in RARE Swan. Starting with simple programming at a young age she moved to web design and development in the 90s.

If you want to see how far web design and development have come, take a look at the early websites in our portfolio. Fair warning, if you have a mouth full of coffee and doughnuts your screen may need a good cleaning!

Rachel's wide range of interests include animal health and behavior - especially basenji dogs, photography, and design. She's a voracious reader, inherited from and nurtured by her mother. She describes herself as a reader, feminist, atheist, scifi and fantasy geek, computer nerd, and all-around dork.

Rachel keeps up on all the technical stuff. She's a perfectionist, which can be exasperating, but the results are well worth the aggravation!

Rena Swan, Head Factotum

The RE in RARE Swan, Rena was a technogeek before there was such a word. She was an early computer owner and made sure the family always had at least one computer, starting with an Apple II+ in the 80s.

As head factotum, Rena thrives on diversity.  Her job description includes customer support, inserting content, tweaking digital media, site testing, bookkeeping, keeping the coffee pot full, and all other things necessary for a well-run company.

Rena's hobbies are varied and include cooking, sewing, fiber arts, decorative painting, Zentangle-inspired drawing, and gardening.

Rachel relies on Rena's honesty and a nonprogrammer's point of view; even though this often results in more work, we produce a much better product in the long run when we work together.

Arreaux & Lyric

We can't forget the most adorkable members of the RARE Swan team:  Arrreaux and his mother Lyric. They're our comic relief and sanity savers. They keep us grounded and rich in affection.
